decodable - Reading Fluency: From "Robot Reading" to Smooth, Expressive Reading

If you're watching your child sound out every word - "Th-... the... c-... cat... sat... on... the... m-... mat" - and still hear something closer to a robot than a reader, you are not alone.

Your child can decode. Every word is right. But the reading is slow, choppy, and flat. You might be wondering: If they can decode, why isn't this working? Did we miss something?

You didn't miss anything. Decoding is the first gear - deliberate, careful, one sound at a time. Fluency is the second gear - smooth, automatic, and expressive. Most children spend months in that choppy first-gear stage before it clicks, and that's completely normal.

Tonight, try echo reading. You read one short line in a natural, smooth, expressive voice. Then your child echoes it back, copying your rhythm and tone. That's it. One minute at a time. No corrections, no pressure - it's singing along, not drilling. Or try the simplest fluency tool there is: reread a book your child has already conquered. Same book, third time through - and suddenly it sounds like reading.

MICRO-TIPS

• Read smooth, not new. Reread one page of a book your child already knows - the brain stops fighting the words and starts finding the rhythm.
• Echo one line at a time. You read it the way it should sound; they echo it back the same way. Sing along, don't drill.
• No timers, no worksheets, no pressure. Fluency practice is a few minutes a few times a week, on real pages you already own.
• Let your voice rise and fall. Model expression - smooth reading sounds like talking, not like a robot. Your child will copy what they hear.
• If it's still choppy, that's normal. The first gear is solid. The second gear just needs practice. It will come.

A NOTE FOR YOU

Watching your child read every word correctly and still sound like a robot can feel like the moment reading was supposed to "click" never quite arrived. Here's the truth: it did arrive. Decoding is done. Fluency is the next, joyful hill to climb - and it's the gift that frees your child's brain to finally understand what they're reading. When the mouth can keep up, the mind gets to make meaning. You're not behind. You're right at the moment the flow starts. Give yourself permission to take a breath.
