Reading Fluency: The Bridge Your Child Is Building

decodable - Reading Fluency: The Bridge Your Child Is Building

January 23, 2026

If your child decodes words correctly but reads slowly, choppily, and without expression, you are not alone - and you are looking at the single most powerful lever in reading right now. That is fluency: the ability to read accurately, at a reasonable pace, with expression. Think of it as the bridge between decoding and comprehension. When words come out slowly, the brain spends all its energy on sounds and none on meaning. When reading becomes fluent, the brain is free to understand.

Fluency is built, not born. It grows from repeated practice with text a child can already decode - the same book read again, and again, until the words stop being puzzles and start being phrases. And here is the part most parents never hear: fluency practice does not have to be fancy. It is rereading, echoing, and reading together. That is it. No worksheets required.

TRY THIS

This week, try echo reading. Zero prep, five minutes, any page.

  • You read one short sentence with expression, at a natural pace, pointing at the words.
  • Your child echoes it back, trying to copy your pace and your feeling.
  • Trade places. Let your child read a sentence first, and you echo them.

Echo reading builds phrasing and rhythm - the two things choppy readers lack - and it is almost impossible to get wrong.

MICRO-TIPS

  • Rereading is not boring; it is building. Familiar words become automatic with repetition.
  • Model expression. Your voice is the best fluency coach your child has.
  • Aim for accuracy, then speed. Speed is the reward for accuracy, never a demand on top of it.
  • Keep it short and sweet. Two five-minute sessions beat one long drilling session.
  • Read together often. Shared reading quietly transfers fluency from your voice to theirs.

A NOTE FOR YOU

If you have watched your child read every word perfectly and yet slowly, you may have wondered if something is still wrong. Nothing is wrong. Choppy reading is not a defect - it is a stage, and it is the stage right before the flow. Your child is not stuck; they are on the bridge, and every echo, every reread, every patient shared page is another plank. Give yourself permission to take a breath. Fluency is the most trainable skill in reading, and you are exactly the person your child needs to train it.

Warmly, - The Decodable Team
